Akram set to face England

England can expect to face Wasim Akram and up to five other senior players criticised by a controversial match-fixing inquiry when they embark on their first major tour of Pakistan for 13 years.

Former skipper Akram emerged with little credit when Judge Qayyum released his long awaited report in Lahore five months ago.

The all-rounder and senior Pakistani spinner Mushtaq Ahmed were both recommended for censure and fines of £3,500 apiece. The judge also believed that neither player should be allowed to captain their country in the future and, in Akram's case, that his finances should be investigated.

"He cannot be said to be above suspicion and should be kept under strict vigilance," said the judge, who, despite being unable to find hard evidence, effectively blackened Akram's reputation. The judge also proposed fines for four other big name Pakistani internationals - Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Akram Raza - for "failing to cooperate" with his inquiry.

Akram, Anwar and Inzamam have all been playing for their country in this week's ICC KnockOut tournament in Kenya while Mushtaq and Waqar could well figure against England during the one-day and the Test series over the next couple of months.

Their continued involvement at the highest level depends on events here early next week when the International Cricket Council are brought up to date with match-fixing developments around the world.
