Adams quits Wycombe

Tony Adams resigned as manager of Wycombe "for personal reasons" today just a year after taking the job.

The former England and Arsenal captain made the shock announcement as his first spell in management ended in disappointment.

"I'd like to thank everybody connected with Wycombe for the time I have spent with them. It has been a good experience and an education," said Adams, 38, in a statement released via his representatives Octagon.

"However, it is with regret that I resign from the post of manager due to personal reasons. I believe the team is in early development and it saddens me to have to leave before finishing the job I started.

"I am sure (head coach) Pete (Cawley) and the players can continue with their good work and achieve all the success that they are worth and is their due."

Despite Adams's statement, Wycombe said early this afternoon they had not formally received his resignation. The club refused to comment on his statement until they had a meeting with Adams which was due to take place at 5pm today.
