They say soap stars and reality TV wannabes need not apply - but judging by the opening night, the most determined D-list figures are always going to slip through.

The latest London nightclub, Mo*vida, considers itself so exclusive that you need to pass an interview to join.

The men behind Chinawhite, Fred Moss, Marc Merran and Sammy Sass, have launched the £2 million project as a haven for A-list celebrities in the heart of Soho.

Mr Merran, 39, said: "It's completely about class. You have to be well known, cool, trendy and friendly. If we feel you are up to scratch, then you are in." Last night's £350,000 launch also attracted Formula One driver Eddie Irvine, Paris Hilton, Ivana Trump and Philip Green. But a few guests did not quite fit the bill.

They included Big Brother winner and Celebrity Wrestling star Kate Lawler; actress Judy Shekoni, whose brief role in EastEnders was followed by a stint on ITV's Celebrity Love Island; model and cable TV presenter Catherine McQueen and Playboy model Victoria Silvstedt.

Membership costs £500 a year, but to be accepted candidates not only have to be nominated - they have to be interviewed and approved.

Perhaps the membership secretary needs re-briefing.
