World Weddings: DJ Ray's Big Day

Ray Heim is a part-time DJ from Long Island with the dress sense of a Radio 1 employee circa 1981 (purple shirt, white tie, huge hair, Cliff Richard glasses ).

At 49, he's already been divorced twice and has left a trail of failed relationships behind him. So he has decided - like loads of other American blokes - to find himself a Russian lady-friend on the internet.

That Russian lady is Natalya, who is 36 and lives in an industrial town with her 11-yearold daughter. Ray forks out for a holiday to Vienna in order to meet her and - guess what? - they get engaged within two days.

Natalya is terribly excited about going to live with Ray in America, and promptly gives up her flat and her job as a beautician so that she can hop on an aircraft to the US at a moment's notice. Ray, however, finds things slightly more difficult at his end.

His visa application seems to be permanently stalled, and he also wires cash to Natalya every week... On top of that, Becky, his teenage daughter, isn't speaking to him because she thinks his relationship with Natalya is "like, so stupid" (mind you, Becky says "like" 11 times during an interview lasting less than a minute, so perhaps we should not trust her as a social commentator).

Cameras follow Ray and Natalya as they build up to their meeting on US soil, and the non-intrusive format of the documentary allows them to be honest about their feelings. This leaves us able to decide for ourselves whether Ray loves Natalya for her looks, or whether she fancies him for his dishwasher. (She's unnaturally excited. Mind you, they do save time in the kitchen...)
