ShowbizWhy we love the Tate ModernEvening Standard11 April 2012As London's most popular gallery celebrates its fifth birthday, artists choose their favourite works on show...ANTHONY CARO: Picasso's Head of a Woman (Fernande), 1909"I love Picasso's Head, simply because it is the greatest sculpture by the world's greatest sculptor."DAVID TATE, GREAT-GREAT GRANDSON OF FOUNDER SIR HENRY TATE: Anthony Caro's Early One Morning, 1962"I like this because it cheers me up. It's red; it's unusual. The Tate has a tradition of making modern art lovely - and the way that they present this piece is very striking."ANTONY GORMLEY: Brancusi's Maiastra, 1912"Maiastra, the bird, is the perfect amalgam of an egg and a penis, and manages to be both very modern and look like a cult object from some oceanic island. Its power belies its size."DAMIEN HIRST: Matisse's The Snail, 1953"The Snail gives me an erection. It's brilliant. A snail is so unimportant and slow and yet he makes it important and colourful. I love the way he makes a spiral out of squares."HOWARD HODGKIN: Vuillard's Lunch at Vasouy, 1901"This pair of pictures was once a large picture and was later divided and reworked. It fascinates me as the successful attempt by a very intimate and 'private' artist to make a painting on a public scale without it becoming a large decoration. The pictures have an immediacy and humanity in the context of Tate Modern, which is very appealing. I like this work, though it's far from being one of my favourites or one of the greatest in the collection. But in it's present setting it is somehow refreshing."TRACEY EMIN: Untitled by Donald Judd, 1990"Although he's not my favourite artist, I really love the Donald Judd "spiral". What I like best about the gallery is that the displays keep moving - which is very healthy. I loved the Louise Bourgeois spider - I only wish I could have started a love affair by saying, 'I'll meet you under the spider'."MORE ABOUTCubismPablo PicassoSculptureSurrealismVisual Artists
