Which party suits Hugh?

There were only two parties in town that mattered last night. At the Italian embassy the glamorous crowd - including Liz Hurley, looking as stunning as you like in white - gathered for a party for the fashion house Salvatore Ferragamo.

Over in Piccadilly, Liz's ex, Hugh Grant, was with the cool Notting Hill set for a screening of Richard Curtis's latest romance, The Girl In The Café.

The question is: where would YOU rather have been? With the lovely Liz and her chums, all dolled up to the nines?

Or slumming it with Hugh and his pals at their charity screening, where judging by our picture of Grant, things were so low-key you had to fetch your own drinks?

On the face of it, the Ferragamo bash in Belgravia was by far the hottest ticket. Classy location, champagne by the bucketful, and gorgeous models. Erin O'Connor and Yasmin Le Bon were there and for a smooth chap like Liz's boyfriend Arun Nayar it was probably heaven on earth.

But maybe it is not that simple. Perhaps the Bafta screening was the cooler party: after all, half of Notting Hill was there including Grant's girlfriend Jemima Khan, Curtis and partner Emma Freud, and their chum Angus Deayton.

The dress code was a lot more relaxed - tieless shirts and rolled up sleeves. No one had bothered to dress up in a penguin suit. The added bonus is that it was all for charity.

The BBC film, which stars Bill Nighy, is part of the Make Poverty History campaign and is probably a movie first: a romantic comedy about Third World debt.

So perhaps the Curtis party edges it on points. There is one problem, however. All those thirty and forty-something Notting Hill types in shirts without ties: if you weren't careful, you could easily mistake them for young Tory politicians on the make. And perhaps even Liz Hurley is cooler than that.
