"But on the downside, it presented a number of serious obstacles to my work." There was considerable sympathy for Mr Allen. "Everyone thinks it's a shame," one parishioner said. "The Church shouldn't have allowed an inexperienced priest to be involved when he was trying to get to know everyone."
In another letter, the Bishop of Salisbury said: "The huge response to the series meant that at the same time as being a priest to three villages he was also attempting to meet the expressed needs of a vast and diverse television audience, who saw him as their priest too. This double role is not sustainable."
Mr Allen has resigned his licence, not his orders, and will remain a priest. The Bishop said he hoped he would soon resume ministry in the undisclosed place where he was now living.
