It makes a decent job of the food it serves — and you may find the restaurant by winding your way behind the bar, along a gangplank and down the spiral stairway into the cosy cellar.

It feels like you're having a secret rendezvous even if you're not at this sexy Holland Park fixture - a warren of interesting rooms, whose intimate nooks and crannies are perfect for romance. The food can be hit-and-miss, but the prices aren't.

Lucky Seven

Tom Conran decided to follow a different path into the world of cuisine than his father, opting for a café-sized eatery rather than the huge scale dining that trademarks the Conran empire. Lucky Seven is now one of the most popular establishments in the area, serving succulent burgers and the most delicious ice-cream milkshakes —including alcoholic varieties.

Osteria Basilico

If only there were more places like this brilliant Notting Hill linchpin, where generous, rustic dishes (with pizza a top tip) are served by friendly staff in intimate (if occasionally chaotic) surroundings.

The Pelican

You'll find the dining room upstairs at the Pelican full of 27 to 37-year-old attractive, mildly scruffy trendies. The wine list is beautifully written and the dishes deliciously wholesome.
