4. Mon Oncle (BFI, U )
Jacques Tati's 1958 comedy opposes the charm and eccentricity of old France with the sterility, stupidity, cupidity and shallowness of the Americanised new. It clearly shows his debt to Buster Keaton (strangely, it was Benny Hill who got to imitating Tati in this country). It's a beautifully shot string of highly ingenious sight gags, all of which are utterly unfunny.
