The worst London movie gaffes!

There's nothing more guaranteed to make a Londoner gnash their teeth and start tearing at the furniture than the classic London movie gaffes that Hollywood films persist in making. From messing up the Underground to fudging locations, here's our top five cock-ups.

Sliding Doors (1998)
Apart from having to endure Gwynnie's strangely Sloane-one-minute-cor-blimey-guv-the-next accent, Londoners were rolling their eyes heavenwards at many of the movie's howling Tube errors. See if you can keep track of this — when Gwynnie's character Helen goes into 'Embankment' station she's actually exiting the Waterloo and City line at Bank station. The 'District Line' train she then catches is in fact a W&C one at Waterloo, and she exits at Bank — although in the film, this magically transforms into Fulham Broadway District Line station! Wow! Confusing AND mysterious...

Cats and Dogs (2001)
At the beginning of this 'fun family comedy' about the secret tussle for world domination that exists between the feline and canine species we see a number 25 London bus chugging down the street. La, la, la, nothing strange here, you think, until you spot the destination on the front of the bus — 'Oxford Station'. Hm. That's a mighty long way for the bus to go, except we don't reckon the filmmakers meant that. You see, this special bus also goes through the non-existent location of 'Holborn Circle', too. Get an A-Z!

The World is Not Enough (2001)
It may have been voted the favourite London movie scene ever, but James Bond careering down the Thames in a speedboat won them no geography fans (well, as if they care). The scene portrayed Pierce Brosnan manfully screeching through the West India docks, although the chase also showed landmarks throughout Millwall's Inner and Outer docks. Tut tut. He also manages to travel from Vauxhall — where the MI6 headquarters are — to the Millenium Dome in a remarkably short space of time...

102 Dalmations (2000)
Note to Hollywood producers: there are no raccoons in Britain. None. At all. Zilch. So don't try and feed us a 'hilarious' comedy scene where helpful raccoons sneak into the puppy-robbers' car in 'London' and mangle the engine to save those adorable dalmations. OK? We just won't buy it.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)
Oh, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, we loved you in Bend it Like Beckham but this film was a load of old cobblers. Anyway, that's not our problem. What is our problem is that in '1974', Christian Bale's character runs through London, where on the side of a double-decker bus are adverts for 'Miss Saigon' — which opened in 1988 — and 'Les Miserables' — which opened in 1985. Obviously those glam-rock suits they all sported also hid time-travel vortexes in the flares.
