When you see her new film, you will think no one else could have possibly played the part. "Maggie was the closest character I've ever played to myself," says Swank. They both came from poor working-class backgrounds and migrated to LA with a defining desire: to be something-more. Maggie to fight. Hilary to act. Swank was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, but moved to Bellingham, Washington State, where her father was in the military, and largely absent. Her mother got in the car and drove to Hollywood when Hilary was 15. For a few weeks they had to live out of that car on nothing but the hope of a better life. The story is like a movie in itself. "Yes, I wish we'd had a video camera, it was such an adventure. My mother believed in me, which is such a gift to a child."
