The vast picture show

There's something wrong with the picture. It's in colour when it should be black and white. At least, that's the way this crossroads appeared in The Last Picture Show, Peter Bogdanovich's study of small-town America.

This is just one of the classic film locations captured as they look now by photographers Steve Harries and Melanie Bles on a road trip across the States, continuing the world's fascination with the maverick American film directors of the 1970s.

From the intimacy of Taxi Driver's bloodstained corridor (which you would hardly recognise) and the iconic Exorcist steps (which haven't changed one bit) to the vast Midwestern landscapes of Badlands and Star Wars, the photographers have done their research.

It's not unusual to see prints of barren streets, crossroads, signposts and general Americana, but the cinematic link draws it all together, connecting a grandiose corner bank in Texas, as used in Bonnie And Clyde, to a jetty in Martha's Vineyard, where Jaws once prowled. To see them juxtaposed with the way they were immortalised nearly 30 years ago is a cinephile's treat indeed.
