All over the world, governments are formulating anti online-piracy laws. The European Union Copyright Directive (EUCD), currently being assessed by the UK, is one such anti-piracy measure.
But the Campaign for Digital Rights (CDR) says harsher punishments are not stopping and will not deter determined pirates: 'The EUCD is meaningless, as most commercial pirates who aren't afraid of existing copyright legislation won't be any more scared of other legislation.'
Most would agree that any long-term defence against the hackers and crackers must involve making the best use of new online technology, not legislating it out of existence.
