Take Anubis Drawing Sausage, by Cabaret Mechanical Theatre founder Paul Spooner. On the surface, it appears to be a simple wooden carving of the Egyptian god of embalming, the dog-headed friend of the recently deceased, who sits at a desk sketching. But look closer and you'll see that he's drawing a novel method of preserving meat (the clue's in the title). And while most of the work is subtly humorous, some are also endowed with startling beauty; pieces like The Flight Into Egypt, where Joseph, Mary, the baby Jesus and a donkey are propped up in mid-air against a starry sky, their detailed arms and hands outstretched.
