The great, the good and the awful

Can you remember what year Robbie Williams's Angels got to No.1? How about Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, or Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer?

In fact, none of them made it to the top of the singles chart - because they were kept at bay by some, er, alternative offerings.

The Teletubbies with their 'classic' hit, Teletubbies Say Eh-oh, pipped Williams to the top in December 1997.

And former EastEnder Nick Berry kept Livin' On A Prayer off the top in 1986 with his song Every Loser Wins.

For the past three weeks, music channel VH1 has tallied 30,000 votes from British viewers to find the Ultimate No.1 singles from the past 25 years - the Greatest, the Worst and the Ones That Never Were.

And fans of Williams got their own back, condemning the roly-poly characters to No.3 on the worst list. But it was worse for Sir Cliff Richard. The veteran's Christmas song Millennium Prayer was voted the worst No.1 ever.

His other Yuletide offerings, Mistletoe and Wine and Saviour's Day, also made the list, at 41 and 67 respectively.

Fans remained loyal to Michael Jackson, voting his 1983 hit, Billie Jean, the greatest No.1 ever and pushing John Lennon's Imagine to No.2.

VH1's Steve Shannon said: 'We were thrilled with the response to the poll and quite surprised by the results.

'Billie Jean is a great song, and it's interesting Michael Jackson's popularity is as strong as ever with four chart positions within the Greatest Top 100.
