The godfather of breaks

I think breaks is popular now as dance music is supposed to be on a downturn - but that's mainly house because it hasn't really moved on and it's been the main club fodder for the last 15 years.

Breakbeat has been the underdog - house's little brother that wasn't taken seriously. Because breakbeat is set around a different set of beats - more funky - there are no rules stopping what you can put over those beats, from electro, funk, rock, techno, dub - anything you want. So it's impossible to pin it down and say breaks is like this or like that - it can be whatever the f**k you want. And it's got an alternative edge - like last Friday, all three of Fabric's rooms were breaks and it was one of their busiest nights of the year.

It seems that anyone that's into dance music can find a style of breaks they like - whether you're into d'n'b, house etc... and that's because it's a scene born out of artists and producers who aren't big on fourtothe-floor beats, so anything goes and it's got a punk attitude about it. I just think it's very adaptable. It's less about being technical and more about giving people more on the dancefloor.
