The big braai fest

According to many a South African, a braai - or South African-style barbecue - is the biggest gift given to the world by their country. Now we'll all have a chance to benefit from their largesse because the South African tourist board has teamed up with the Coin Street Festival to offer Londoners The Big Braai.

A team from the Springbok cafe group, Fish Hoek and Dumela, will offer everything from ostrich steak with a monkey gland sauce, to springbok and sosaties (kebabs) and traditional Cape Malay and Durban Indian cuisine. But is anyone up for some boerewors (the braai staple of spicy farm-style sausages) with a delicious side order of pap (boiled corn meal)? There will also be Castle lager, another braai staple, and exotic fruit juices.

Stars from the hit musical Umoja will perform excerpts from the show, and there'll be a line-up of South African musicians including Doreen Thobekile (who appeared with Tammy Wynette on KLF's 'Justified And Ancient'). Master crafters will demonstrate their wares and there are activities, including mask-making and storytelling, for the kids.
