The best slushy movies

If you can't bear the thought of sharing a restaurant dinner with 100 other slobbering couples, or you're on your own and just want to forget about it, then you can do a lot worse than bunking down in front of the telly with a quality weepie. We've rounded up the five best slushy movies to enjoy on Feb 14th...

An Affair to Remember (1957)
If anyone needed proof that this 1950's sobfest was established as one of the most romantic films ever, then just watch Sleepless in Seattle. This is the movie Meg Ryan watches throughout and the plot lifts directly from this 1950's classic, where the two characters agree to meet atop the Empire State Building. With supreme smoothie Cary Grant as playboy Nicky Ferrante and Deborah Kerr as nightclub singer Terry McKay, whose fledgling romance has to overcome twists of fate, it's a lovely, warm pillowy-afternoon of a movie.

The Princess Bride (1987)
'As you wish'. Dribble. British actor Cary Elwes made his mark as the best Errol Flynn that never was in this romantic adventure yarn...for children? Amazingly, director Rob Reiner manages to make The Princess Bride both satirical, entertaining and sweetly idyllic at the same time. Following the travails of Westley as he tries to save his beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) from the dastardly Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), as told by Columbo to his grandson Fred Savage (it does make sense, honest), it's utterly charming.

Gone With the Wind (1939)
Ah, you can't beat a good few hours of Rhett'n'Scarlet action for a pure, unadulterated slush-fest. Adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s bestselling Civil War potboiler, it's as heart-wrenchingly dramatic as they come. Eminently quotable — 'Sir, you are no gentleman'... 'And you, Miss, are no lady...' 'After all... tomorrow is another day'... 'Frankly, my dear...' etc. — and enormously enjoyable, it’s a soppy must-see.

Love Story (1970)
'Love means never having to say you're sorry.' BAWL. Dig out the Kleenex, top up the wine and crack open the Dairy Milk for this classic melodrama about two beautiful students who meet, fall in love and, well, I couldn't possibly tell you any more. Ryan O'Neal is spoilt preppy rich kid Oliver who falls for Ali MacGraw's Jenny, who, guess what, is from the 'wrong side of the tracks'. It’s a total period piece these days, but doesn't mean it's not hugely delicious fun.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Billy Crystal before he got irritating! Meg Ryan before her lips inflated! And cute old people talking inbetween scenes! Huzzah! Not soppy in the slightest, apart from those errant crinkly folk, WHMS is a top tale of two friends, who wonder whether they can ever get their rocks off with each other and not ruin their friendship. Of course they can't, but that's cos they LOVE EACH OTHER, see? Ahhh.
