The art of cooking

Delia, Jamie and Nigella's cookery books may be full of top tips on how to rustle up the perfect three-course meal to impress your mates, but when it comes to real culinary creativity you need to ask an artist.

Art charity SPACE has done just that. It has collected hand-written and illustrated recipes, hangover cures and handy hints from more than 100 artists including Bridget Riley, Gillian Wearing and Tracey Emin for a new book SPACE Cooks. All profits from sales of the cookbook and limited-edition prints by six of the featured artists, including this year's Turner Prize nominees Catherine Yass and Liam Gillick, will help fund the charity's new resource centre and artist studio complex in Hackney.

All tastes are catered for, from the simple and straightforward to the conceptual and surreal. Gavin Turk's photographic instructions for home-made tagliatelle or George Bolst's mushroom soup (left) may whet your appetite. But Bob and Roberta Smith's 'Grit Surprise With Plaster Of Paris Pudding', Matt Hale's recipe for humble pie and shots of performance artist Bobby Baker wearing a Sunday roast ? including a beef bra, roast potato necklace and apple pie shoes ? are for those with stronger stomachs. Even starving artists get a look in with Thomas Kilpper's instructions on how to stay healthy while eating nothing at all.
