There was comfort for more venerable stars, too: defying the years with hectic touring schedules, Tom Jones and Rod Stewart have boosted their coffers by £9 million and £6 million respectively, placing them in positions eight and nine.
Meanwhile Coldplay's dazzling year continues. Having won awards at the Brits and the Grammys, and sold millions of copies of new album A Rush of Blood to the Head, the indie rockers have another £5.5 million in the bank and reach number 10 in the chart - higher than U2. All that, and lead singer Chris Martin is dating a Hollywood star, Gwyneth Paltrow.
Several new names have entered the chart. R&B vocalist Daniel Bedingfield is on a par with Craig David at number 17 with £2 million. And the power of Pop Idol helped Will Young and Gareth Gates to reach joint 20th, with £1.2 million each.
But some big names have fallen off the end of the chart, including Dido, David Gray, Sting, Damon Albarn, Jamiroquai, Gabrielle, Atomic Kitten and Hear'Say.
