Talk of the town

He's the most famous architect in the world. Responsible for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the as yet unbuilt, but much talked about, Spiral extension at the V&A, the serenely beautiful, but temporary Serpentine pavilion, and now winner of the competition to rebuild the site at Ground Zero.

He's Daniel Libeskind, the pint-sized Pole, with a penchant for Armani suits and cowboy boots, his full head of grey hair impeccably coiffed above a pair of thickrimmed specs that only an architect or an optician's model could get away with.

He's a showman with a fierce intellect and sense of humour that could only be Jewish. When he talks, his ideas pour out in sharp, short sentences, like gunfire, bang, bang, bang.
