Taking the long shot

Here's a Taiwanese film being marketed as a gay film - which is a bit like describing Harry Potter as a film only for wizards. An empty apartment is being used by two blokes - one's camping out there, the other's using it as a love nest. Neither knows about the other. And neither realises that the female agent flogging it also uses it as an occasional bolthole.

Eventually, of course, worlds collide, in a film about the search for tenderness in a furtive society. It's really notable for its static camera and long, slow scenes where little happens but what does - eating, shaving, smoking, whatever - is transformed into poignant essays in hidden yearning. Not for Mel Gibson fans.

Verdict: Viva!
