It sounds the perfect summer evening. The chance to savour a much-loved film under the stars with a chilled beer.

Thousands of Londoners are expected to enjoy free alfresco screenings of Oscar winners Gladiator and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the East End tomorrow and Friday.

The Stella Screen on Location experience has proved hugely popular, drawing a record 35,000 crowd in Brighton. Now its sixth annual tour of Britain, which includes viewings of favourites such as The Beach in venues such as Bristol and Plymouth, is coming to Victoria Park in Mile End.

Stella Artois brand manager Kay Dodds said: "It is about more than just watching a good film outdoors. It's about the whole experience of sharing a chilled beer and a laugh with a community of thousands - the ultimate end to a perfect summer's day, and best of all, it doesn't cost you a penny!

"The programme is a celebration of the growing popularity of cinema in the UK. We are encouraging movie lovers to leave the traditional dark, cloistered cinema atmosphere, and providing a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of summer and the best of film."

The capital's open-air offerings, which will be shown using "Europe's most powerful projector" on a massive 30ft by 60ft screen, will start at 7.30pm. Check www.stellascreen.co.uk for listings, which may change.
