Step into the past

Caesar's Camp, Wimbledon Common SW19, just west of junction of A219 and B281. This enclosure has been known since the 18th century as Caesar's Camp, although originally it probably acted as a collecting point for people and animals. A public footpath goes through the centre of the camp on Wimbledon golf course.

Caeser's Camp, Keston East side of A233 at Keston, Kent. Impressive threebanked enclosure at the head of the Ravensbourne, a tributary of Thames.
Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe B259 at Swanscombe, Kent. Former chalk quarry where the back of a female skull dating back 400,000 years was discovered - the oldest skull of a human to be found in this country. Today the area is a nature reserve.
Museum of London 150 London Wall, EC2. The new London Before London gallery tells the story of the Thames Valley from the arrival of the first humans some 450,00 years ago until the Roman invasion.
British Museum Great Russell Street, WC1. Includes outstanding collection of finds from the Thames, including the famous Battersea Shield and Waterloo Helmet.
Loughton Camp and Ambresbury Banks Both east side of the A104 in Epping Forest, Essex. Two large enclosures within Epping Forest, both possibly dating back over 2,000 years. Like Caesar's Camp, Wimbledon, they probably acted as a collecting point for people and animals.
Thames at Syon Thames footpath from Richmond to Kew, Surrey. This is one of a few areas in Central London where the Thames riverside remains similar to its appearance thousands of years ago. Dredging operations here in the 19th century produced large numbers of finds.
Natural History Museum Cromwell Road, SW7. In the foyer there is the largest surviving mammoth skull found in Britain, discovered in Ilford in the 19th century.
Kit's Coty House, Aylesford Just west of A229, Kent. Burial mound, orientated east to west with the striking remains of a burial chamber or entrance at the east end made from sarsen (sandstone) boulders.
Butser Ancient Farm Just off the A3 four miles south of Petersfield, Hampshire. This site is a replica of the type of farm that would have existed about 2,300 years ago. It has buildings, structures, animals and crops of the kind that existed at the time.
