Status Quo cancer fear

Status Quo have pulled out of their sell-out British tour amid fears that one of the band has throat cancer.

Lead guitarist Rick Parfitt has been told he has a growth on his vocal cords which could be malignant.

The 57-year-old, who smokes 50 cigarettes a day, was given a checkup by doctors after complaining of a throat condition.

The band's manager Simon Porter said Parfitt was expected to have exploratory surgery next week. It means all nine remaining dates of their 40-concert tour have been cancelled, including shows at Wembley Arena, Manchester Apollo and Birmingham NEC. Ticket holders will be refunded.

'This morning Rick saw Stephen Toynton, an ear, noise and throat surgeon at the Nuffield Hospital in Plymouth,' said Mr Porter.

'He has expressed concern with a growth in Rick's larynx and has recommended it requires urgent investigation. Consequently, all nine shows on the tour have been cancelled.

'While the band regret having to disappoint their fans, they are thankful for their understanding at this difficult time and look forward to seeing them soon.'

Status Quo began their tour, which marks their 40th anniversary, in October. During their career, they have had more than 60 hit singles, including Whatever You Want, In The Army Now and Down Down.

It is not the first time Parfitt, who has successfully battled addictions to alcohol and cocaine, has been seriously ill.

He underwent a quadruple heart bypass operation in 1994, which led to 20 festival dates being cancelled.
