It was, of course, St Patrick's Day. So what more traditional sight could there be in London than that of Shane MacGowan raising a pint of Guinness and having a singalong?

Bringing this sharply up to date was a younger generation's rock wildman: Pete Doherty, troubled lead singer of Babyshambles.

The pair - seen arm in arm, voices raised in beery song and each clutching a half-drained glass of stout - sent their fans wild with an impromptu performance last night. Adding glamour to the occasion was model Kate Moss, Doherty's girlfriend, in jeans and red boots.

MacGowan, lead singer of the Pogues (on and off) for more than 20 years, clambered on stage at the Boogaloo Bar in north London during a Babyshambles concert.

The sight of the two men sharing a stage sent the sold-out venue into a frenzy. Doherty, 26, was dressed in his trademark trilby and dark suit; MacGowan, 47, was typically less well-groomed. Both had what might have been shamrocks pinned to their lapels, but with all the Guinness sloshing around, it was difficult to be certain.

With these two under the same roof, it would be wise to expect some sort of rumpus. But it was Moss, 31, who provided it. She was heard arguing with bouncers who tried to shield her from photographers. "Let go of me," she shouted, and: "Stop dragging me."

Former Libertines frontman Doherty seemed to be having a happier night despite facing a 10pm curfew as he waits for charges of robbery and blackmail to be dealt with. He spend four nights in jail on remand for allegedly attacking documentary maker Max Carlish, a week in rehab for his heroin problem and last month scuffled with his guitarist at a Brixton Academy gig.

But none of that would cause McGowan to raise an eyebrow. After all, he was behaving badly when Doherty was still at primary school.
