Pete Doherty arrested

Rock star Pete Doherty has been arrested after being accused of assault and robbery during an alleged fight at a London hotel.

The ex-Libertines front man, who is dating supermodel Kate Moss, spent last night in a police cell after being arrested at the Rookery Hotel in Clerkenwell.

Doherty was said to have been involved in a fight with award-winning documentary film-maker Max Carlish before allegedly robbing him of cash and other items.

A second musician was also arrested for robbery at the hotel later.

Mr Carlish, 38, who has spent seven months filming a documentary of Doherty's new band Babyshambles was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises to his face.

He said today that he suffered two black eyes and a broken nose. "There was nothing I could do ... he was going mad. I'm blind without my glasses but he pulled them off and smashed them on the floor and trampled on them," he said.

"Despite the drugs, he's quite a big bloke. His eyes were wild. It was terrifying," Mr Carlish told the Mirror newspaper

Police were called to the hotel at 6.30pm and initially arrested Doherty for assault and theft. He was later re-arrested for assault and robbery.

The second musician was arrested at 11pm hours after Doherty was taken into custody at Islington police station. It is not known if he is also a member of Doherty's band, who were forced to cancel a planned concert last night.

A police doctor who examined Doherty said the musician had been high on drugs when he had examined him in the station. Speaking as he left, the doctor said Doherty bore scars from injecting heroin on his hands, he added.

Detectives are expected to wait until Doherty has recovered before interviewing him today. They were trying to trace Mr Carlish last night after he was discharged from hospital.

The fracas erupted days after the filmmaker released footage of Doherty smoking heroin in a bid to shock the rock star into rehab.
