One in the eye for Ramsay

Usually it is Gordon Ramsay who hands out abuse to the amateurs seconded to work in his restaurant kitchen in Channel 4 show The F-Word.

But when he took on a team of four A & E doctors from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital he got a little more than he bargained for when boiling hot stock was splashed into his face - completely by accident of course. Emergency specialist registrar Lucy Bingham was the culprit.

"I really thought I'd burnt his eye, I thought, 'That's it, forget the cooking, we've got to take him straight to emergency,'" she said today.

"I'd got knocked as I was moving a pan of stock and it fell on to the hob, which is blindingly hot, and it splashed back up at him. I thought, 'It's Gordon Ramsay, ace chef, and I've blinded him.' I was really worried.

"I immediately went into doctor mode and thought, 'Sod the kitchen' and rushed over to him. I think he was startled and shocked but thankfully he was fine. I got away without any swearing from him because I think he found it quite amusing how I flipped so quickly into being a doctor."

Despite the blunder, the women insist they were cool as cucumbers in the kitchen, all because of their A & E training. The four - including registrar Gboyinwa Ajayi, 31, and consultants Francesca Garnham, 35, and Peta Longstaff, 51 - even wonwords of praise from Ramsay, who declared them "f***ing good news".

Ms Bingham, 32, said: "A & E is just like Gordon's kitchen because it's so frantic, so busy and there are massive time constraintsand we have to deal with people like Gordon.

"On any average Friday or Saturday you get people effing and blinding at you and you just can ' t get wound up. So when Gordon's shouting, you just sort of block it out."

Elsewhere in the episode, broadcaster John Humphrys comes off worst in a contest to find who makes the best lamb curry.

Ramsay says: "I thought you'd be a lot more together but you're worse than a f***ing vegetarian."
