Now it's Blunkett the TV drama

We've had David Blunkett the musical and David Blunkett the play, now a satirical drama about the MP's affair with Kimberly Quinn is to be shown on television.

A Very Social Secretary stars Bernard Hill, pictured here for the first time as the former home secretary, and Victoria Hamilton as Spectator publisher Quinn. Robert Lindsay plays Tony Blair and Stuart McQuarrie is Spectator editor and Tory MP Boris Johnson.

The film is being made by Mentorn, which produced the recent drama about Dr David Kelly, The Government Inspector, to launch Channel 4's digital service More4 in October.

It comes in the wake of Martin Witts's David Blunkett - The Musical, and Toby Young's play Who's The Daddy at Islington's King's Head Theatre.

It is bound to cause further embarrassment for Mr Blunkett, who resigned from the Government last year but has since returned as Work and Pensions Secretary.

"Blunkett's misjudgments illustrate how New Labour has become overly comfortable with its power and its unexpected perks," said Peter Dale, head of More4, who was unveiling more details of the channel at the Edinburgh International Television Festival today. The Evening Standard can reveal that A Very Social Secretary will be the first in a series of controversial drama-documentaries to be screened monthly on Monday nights.

A topical drama, provisionally titled Animal Research, will focus on animal experimentation. More4 will boast the UK premiere of Downfall, the Oscar-nominated movie about life in Hitler's bunker and starring Bruno Ganz.

Mr Dale said the programmes-"sum up what we want More4 to be - a lively, outspoken and above all entertaining channel for viewers who want more from digital TV than repeats, football and back-to-back acquisitions."

Nearly two thirds of the channel's £33 million programming budget will be ploughed into "original, British content". More4 will be available to more than 15 million homes via Freeview, Sky Digital and cable. .

A Very Social Secretary will premiere on More4 at 8pm on 10 October.
