New visual delights

Without the headline-grabbing exhibits of previous shortlists, this year's Turner Prize seems a rather tame affair. In the running for the £20,000 award are Fiona Banner, best known for her 'still film' wordscapes; Liam Gillick, who creates sculptures and installations; Keith Tyson, whose installations explore outer space via scientific and philosophical theorems; and Catherine Yass, who weaves Indian inspirations into her most recent 'lightbox' works. Steven Campbell: The Caravan Club

Their names won't mean much now, but back in the Eighties, a group of Scottish figurative painters known as the Glasgow Boys became yesterday's answer to the Brit Art pack. Among them was Steven Campbell who, after almost a decade battling ill health and struggling with personal tragedy, finally returns with fresh work. These brightly coloured, painterly canvases are dappled by dark undercurrents, half-hinted at in jarring poses and titles and violent juxtapositions. Andres Serrano

American photographer Andres Serrano is still best known for his notorious 'Piss Christ', and his more recent work has struggled to convince a hard-to-shock art world. On show here are some of 49 portraits created in response to last year's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, and each represents a different face of America. From a blonde-haired, dimpled boy scout to a weary postal worker, each subject exudes dignity and individuality, if not originality. Art In The Making: Underdrawings In Renaissance Paintings

Modern technology has revealed the centuries-old secrets of some of the National Gallery's best-known Renaissance paintings. Using an infra-red technique, art historians have been able to peer beneath layers of paint to glimpse the 'underdrawings', digitally capturing these images to hang beside their finished selves.
