Nancy steals the show

It was supposed to be television's big night out - but the show was stolen by Nancy Dell'Olio.

Ms Dell'Olio, partner of England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, looked the height of glamour at the Royal Albert Hall in the floor-skimming black and white creation.

And she also managed to see off former love rival Ulrika Jonsson, who turned down her invitation when she heard Ms Dell'Olio would be presenting the prize for best drama serial.

However, her frock and gloves ensemble earned her a catty quip from East-Enders showman Shane Richie, who said: "She'd make a great Slater sister."

Despite refusing to answer questions about Jonsson, who had a very public affair with 54-year-old Eriksson, the lawyer clearly enjoyed being the centre of attention backstage.

Ms Dell'Olio, who is behind the Truce International football charity for world peace, said: "I had a very good evening, I hope the future of the charity will be very special."

Her ballgown was from Kruszynska, a boutique which also provided the red catsuit Ms Dell'Olio famously wore to a reception at Downing Street.

The Italian lawyer refused to stop and talk to fans on the red carpet but she made sure to flash the enormous diamond ring on her wedding finger, which she wore over her satin gloves.

The other big star of the night was Tony Blair, who stunned guests with a surprise appearance to honour veteran newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald.

The Prime Minister appeared onstage at the Royal Albert Hall to present an honorary gong to the 63-year-old newsman, who was hosting the National Television Awards.

Sir Trevor was visibly shocked by Mr Blair's 10pm arrival, which had not been announced, and covered his face with his hands.

Mr Blair said: "It is a privilege to present this to someone I admire enormously. He is someone admired and respected by everyone in this country."
