Second in the list of deserving directors who missed out on the ultimate Hollywood accolade is Martin Scorsese, who has been nominated five times since 1981. This year he is being tipped to win with The Aviator.
And Stanley Kubrick, despite being nominated for films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, is third in the survey by Turner Classic Movies TV channel.
Topping the list for the actor and actress never to have won are Samuel L Jackson, who was nominated for Pulp Fiction, and Demi Moore, whose hits include Indecent Proposal.
