Model behaviour

The ICA takes a trip to the visual excesses of the Eighties with portrait-based film and photographic work by two influential artists each produced in collaboration with their models.

Known for his portraits of famous faces from the worlds of art, film and politics, British-born photographer Fergus Greer spent six years from 1988 to 1994 working with performer, club owner and designer Leigh Bowery. The resultuing life-size portraits show Bowery in his extraordinary fetishised outfits and make-up.

At the same time in New York, photographer and film-maker Richard Kern was working with other artists, poets, writers and film-makers including Lydia Lunch, Jim Foetus and Sonic Youth, to push the boundaries of the portrayal of sex, drugs and violence.

A programme of Kern's films, including The Bitches and Sewing Circle, from what became known as the Cinema Of Transgression, an be seen alongside his constructed cheesy softcore porn photos produced in collaboration with the models and seen in his recent book Model Release.
