Mighty mouse and the monk

Whatever else you think of Katharina Fritsch's work, it is deeply unlikely you would want one all of your very own.

The 45-year-old Fritsch makes sculptures that mingle the cosy associations of domestic architecture with the subconscious horrors of German folk tales. The result is the kind of thing to make you look under your bed before turning in at night: think Rachel Whiteread meets the Brothers Grimm or Giorgio de Chirico meets Little Red Riding Hood.

Take Witch's House And Toadstool, a minimalist cottage-on-a-plinth surrounded by a trio of mounted coloured balls. The piece is seductive on two levels. First, it's elegant in an art-gallery kind of way, a play on the modernist repertoires of Mondrian and geometric abstraction.

But Fritsch's work also seduces because its simplicity is not so much minimalist as childlike; we've all seen that cottage before and we know who lives in it. It's as though Carl Andre had taken to working in Lego: what Fritsch finds is a kind of equivalence between platonic sculptural forms and universal fairy tales.

If that isn't enough to provoke nightmares, then try her Monk - no exposure to Catholicism needed to make this one scary - or Man And Mouse. Here, the power of the mouse as a Jungian symbol is reflected in the rodent's sudden shift of scale. The beautifully detailed, cuddly little critter is now 8ft high, sitting on the chest of a sleeping man. You don't even need to look under the bed for Fritsch's monsters. They come out and look for you.
