Louie Vega looks back

Studio 54 was one of the pioneering superclubs, but on the level of actors, actresses and famous people from all different areas of the entertainment world having a good time with regular club-goers. It's definitely a historic place for our music.

It played the more commercial side of disco, but Studio 54 has a special place in dance music in general. I played there in the 1980s, after the whole disco era, not during it. Inside, you could feel the spirit and energy. The main room was amazing, like a big theatre. The sound system was great, and so was its location on 54th Street.

At that time, you had the Paradise Garage, too, where stars hung out, but that never wanted to be commercial. Its DJ, Larry Levan, was at the top of his game. Studio 54 was the more commercial side of it.

It was all over the newspapers, with A-list actors and musicians hanging out with everyone. Paradise Garage had the underground, but celebs, too - Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, you name it - they all used to go to Paradise Garage.
