CUBAN

CUBANA Two trendy restaurantdancebars providing great cocktails and food in a fantasy, pre-revolutionary Havana setting. Eat Cuba's quintessential dish, Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians), succulent beans and rice - with chicken, fish, beef or pork - and follow that with coconut or banana 'pudin'. COLOMBIAN

TORO NEGRO A spacious restaurant drawing a mixed crowd and lots of children at weekends. Used to have an entirely Colombian menu but added Argentinian and Mexican dishes when it changed its name from Los Arrieros recently. Favourites are fried tilapia fish and sancocho stew - big chunks of meat, yucca, potatoes and plantains floating in a glorious yellow soup. Try the UK version of Refajo beer, with Irn Bru replacing Colombian pop for a bizarre shandy. London Bridge Station, SE1 (020-7403-6226).

LA PIRAGUA Combining Argentine, Venezuelan and Colombian cuisine, this is good homecooked food. The salsa is loud - a great place for a noisy night out. 176 Upper Street, N1 (020 7354 2843).

LA MAZORCA Atmospheric restaurant, good for Sunday lunches and birthday parties. Favourites are vandeja paisa, a Medellin dish of mixed meats and red beans, and the dessert arequipe con brevas (fruits preserved in sugar). 384 Brixton Road, SW9 (020-7274 1919).

PERUVIAN

TITO'S RESTAURANT Peruvian-run restaurant next to London Bridge station with a small downstairs disco. The atmosphere is typical - Andean decor, imported beer and ceviche - white fish marinated in limes and served with Choclo (fried 'teeth' of white corncobs). 4-6 London Bridge Street, SE1 (020-7407 7787).

FINA ESTAMPA London's first Peruvian restaurant, named after a famous Latin song (the 'Seal Of Quality'), is a classy, upmarket place. Favourite dish: Aji de Gallina (chicken stew) cooked with chilli, peanuts and cheese. 150 Tooley Street, SE1 (020-7403 1342).

ARGENTINIAN
