Dannii told them: "You say you want to be taken seriously for your singing but there are certain things about you tonight that took away from that."

Cheryl added: "If I was your mentor I would have brought you out looking demure and show what you can do as singers. But instead you come out dressed a bit provocatively and that's the image you give off."

(Hear hear, Chez... we only hope she remembers these sentiments as she dons her dental-floss outfit for the next Girls Aloud performance.)

Kandy Rain was subsequently voted off on the results show last night, and Khatereh was quick to set the record straight, saying after last night's show: "We don't get much choice in what we wear!"

Our backstage source added: "The girls wanted to try something more classy, but Louis felt it was best for them to play up to their sexy image. They didn't really have much of a say in the matter, so they were devastated after being voted off."

Cheryl went out of her way to apologise to Kandy Rain after Saturday night's final in scenes that were shown on the Xtra Factor on ITV2 last night.

She waited for them in their dressing room, where she told them: "I just wanted to say it wasn't personal from me. I was trying to help you. I hope it was constructive. If you don't want to dress like this, stand up for yourselves and tell Louis. I felt really bad and I just wanted to say to your faces that it wasn't meant to be nasty."

Sadly it was too little too late and the girls won't be getting a second chance...
