Julia's baby in intensive care

One of the twins born prematurely to Julia Roberts is in intensive care, it was reported last night.

The actress is said to be distraught after daughter Hazel Patricia, born weighing just 4lb 5oz, was placed in an incubator after suffering respiratory problems.

Her son, Phinnaeus Walter, is said to be thriving.

He was a lot stronger and weighed 5lb 6oz at birth.

The twins arrived five weeks early after Miss Roberts suffered complications in the last stages of her pregnancy.

She and husband Danny Moder are keeping an aroundthe-clock vigil for their daughter at the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles where they have remained since the babies were born nearly two weeks ago.

'This is every mother's worst nightmare - to have a new baby struggle to survive after being born prematurely,' said a close friend. 'Hazel has had respiratory problems since birth and was placed in an incubator while her lungs fully develop.

'Doctors have tried to reassure Julia that the chances are good that Hazel will be fine and there will be no long- term complications.

'And she has tried to tell herself that Hazel is just a sweet little cake that came out of the oven too soon and needs to bake a little longer.

'But Julia is making no secret of the fact that she is scared to death.

'She and Danny have desperately wanted children for so long and now it is devastating that she can't take her little girl home with her.'

Premature babies are at risk from a number of potentially dangerous problems because they are weaker and their systems are not fully developed.

Hazel is believed to have jaundice as well as respiratory problems. 'With Hazel all they were able to do for the first few days was look wistfully at her through the glass and hope and pray that everything would be OK,' the source told the U.S. magazine National Enquirer.
