ShowbizJo's top ten rules for parentsMarianne Macdonald|Evening Standard11 April 2012Supernanny Jo Frost's Channel 4 show has been the runaway success of the summer. Here's her top ten tips for having a well-behaved child...1. BOUNDARIES Set clear boundaries so your child knows what constitutes unacceptable behaviour, and equally, what is expected of them. 2. DISCIPLINE When disciplining, use a firm, authoritative voice. Kneel down to their level and maintain eye contact.3. WARNINGS Always give warnings before a punishment. It gives a child the chance to redeem his or her behaviour.4. EXPLANATION Make sure any punishment is explained. Ask your child if he knows why he is being punished so similar behaviour can be avoided in future.5. CONSISTENCY Once you have established rules and punishments stick to them. Ad-hoc discipline will only confuse children.6. REWARDS Praise and unconditional love are vital, so reward good behaviour - pin up a chart and award stars that translate into treats.7. RESTRAINT Avoid losing your temper. Remember, you are the adult. Shouting back shows loss of control.8. RESPONSIBILITY Include children in family life. Give them small responsibilities to provide a sense of inclusion and importance.9. ROUTINE Set times, especially for feeding, bathing and bed, are key to preventing tantrums. Make a daily routine chart and stick to it.Read MoreNursery worker convicted of child sexual abuse faces more chargesBest natural sleep aids: Remedies and supplements to help you drift offJessie Buckley: Who is the Golden Globe winner's husband and do they have children?SponsoredMake 2026 the year of working smarter10.
