Former England cricketer Phil Tufnell and sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher will be the hosts.
Tufnell, currently a panellist on BBC1 quiz show They Think It's All Over, has built up an impressive career in presenting since winning I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! last year.
A 1,500ft arena, with an 80,000 gallon tank for water sports, is being built especially for the show, to be staged in St Helier at an estimated cost of £10million.
Games will include competitors being shot from a cannon into foam, while others try to scale a wall with water running down it.
A TV insider said: 'Each week two teams representing a town or city in England will compete in a variety of physical, strength-testing challenges - but there will also be a strong element of fun and frolics.
Each show will also feature music from some of today's biggest pop acts along with a celebrity guest.'
The new format has been copied from a French show, by Mistral Productions, which has been a huge hit on the Continent. Equipment from the original show will be shipped in from France.
Made by Channel TV for Carlton, the programme will run for eight weeks, although the production team have asked for the set to be made available for four years.
Shooting begins in July - with the first episodes broadcast within weeks - and will continue for at least a month.
