Britney Spears has launched a bid to become President of the United States — but Barack Obama has nothing to worry about.

The singer set out her policies on American TV last night and vowed if she got to the White House, she would give everyone free pie and hire P Diddy as her vice-president.

It wasn't a genuine attempt to succeed where Sarah Palin failed — Britney was appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman in the show's nightly Top Ten segment.

The sketch involves humorous topics read by Letterman, which he occasionally hands over to a celebrity guest.

Last night it was Britney's turn, and she jokingly announced: "Ways The Country Would Be Different If Britney Spears Were President".

Having shown off her tour-toned body by the pool during the past week, she was clearly keen to keep up the momentum as she perched on a desk in a skimpy black bikini and announced what she would do if she was in charge.

And while she received a round of applause for suggesting that "America might have a more coherent fiscal strategy", her other policies proved more laughter-inducing than vote-winning.

She promised to be "the first president to wear eye shadow since Nixon", and declared that the US "would only invade fun places like Cabo".

Her situation room would be "a cabana at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas" and her press conferences would include costume changes.

She would lure Osama Bin Laden out of hiding with her new perfume "Circus Fantasy" and challenge the country to have a nightclub on the moon within 10 years.
