Its rabble-rousing DJs include Primal Scream's Mani, Queens Of Noize and Har Mar Superstar, whose recent second LP has proved he is no one-summer novelty act. The live action comes from a selection of contenders for Next Big Thing, including the scantily clad, punky, electro female duo Ten Minutes With My Dad, and the lingerie/gimp mask-sporting boy/girl electro rebel noiseniks Gobsausage with an audience-grabbing (literally) act.

Jon Carter returns to clubland at Type this weekend. The DJ/producerturnedpub landlord has been pretty busy over the last 12 months, making a pilgrimage to Cuba with his mate Banksy, working on Wall Of Sound's Two Culture Clash project at Geejam Studios atop Jamaica's Blue Mountain, producing for his own Savile Row label and remixing the Beastie Boys. It is the DJ front we are interested in and, although his style - rough and raw acid housemeets-dirty basslines - is pretty singular, it charges dance floors with an infectious vibe. Carter has never been afraid to mix it up and, after rekindling his love of dancehall/ reggae in its motherland, there is bound to be a hint of big, bashy house.

For all London's established venues and superclubs with the resources for slick flyers, ads in glossies and PRs to chase coverage, the lifeblood of the capital's globally envied club scene is the huge number of crews with everyday jobs who put on nights because they love it. One such crew is South London's Gettin' Hectic, who regularly throw parties at Brixton's Telegraph. They present a boat party this weekend with Gettin' Hectic Sur Mer. The soundtrack is classic hip hop of the sort that results in you looking like a prat while trying to recreate your breakdancing heyday and feelgood soul from Motown to Prince via Michael Jackson. There is also an Iberian guitar player for the boat's open-air top deck and an after party at an Italian restaurant spread over three floors in the weekend ghost town that is the City - which at least means fewer witnesses to said dodgy dance moves.

Residencies at Herbal's Friday monthly Herbalism and weekly Sundays at Bluu (formerly Bluenote), as well as their impromptu warehouse parties, have made Hackney's Shiva Soundsystem synonymous with superior Asian-influenced breakbeat. And indicating this movement's open-mindedness is this Sunday's new Supersonic Buddha night, which falls on Indian Independence Day. In a display of South Asian unity, DJs representing Pakistan (Fun-Da-Mental main man Akhi Nawaz with Qawwali meets punk), Bangladesh (Bengali folk worked into breakbeat from State Of Bengal's Sam Zamam) and, of course, India (Sitar Funk's Coco Verma) will join the Shiva residents.
