'I feel as if I am trying to scrounge around and pick up the pieces in the midst of this media circus.
'I choose to believe my husband. At this point I wouldn't be surprised by anything but I would much rather choose to believe him.'
Her former Friends co- star and best friend Courteney Cox was less charitable about the commitment Pitt showed for his wife while filming Mr and Mrs Smith with Miss Jolie last year.
'I don't think he started an affair physically, but I think he was attracted to her,' she said.
'There was a connection, and he was honest about that with Jen.
'Most of the time when people are attracted to other people they don't tell. At least he was honest about it.
'It was an attraction he fought for a period of time.'
The interview also revealed aspects of the marriage breakdown that Miss Aniston still has trouble dealing with.
When asked about rumours that Miss Jolie, who recently adopted a second child, is also pregnant with Pitt's baby, she is reported to have sobbed for 'several long minutes'.
She explained that she was sad she and Pitt had proved the old adage about showbusiness marriages never lasting.
She also admitted she had turned to therapy to help her deal with her impending divorce. 'I've got an unbelievable support team and I'm a tough cookie. I believe in therapy, I think it's an incredible tool in educating the self on the self.
'I feel very strong. I'm very proud of how I've conducted myself,' she said.
'Am I lonely? Yes. Am I upset? Yes. Am I confused? Yes. Do I have my days when I've thrown a little pity party for myself? Absolutely. But I'm also doing really well.
'The sad thing for me is the way it's been reduced to a Hollywood cliche.'
When asked whether she was seeing anyone Miss Aniston replied: 'I'm excited that I know there's somebody out there for me, but I am absolutely in no rush....This was a seven- year relationship that was very dear, very complicated, very special. I need to honour it.' She was confident that there was an 'amazing man' waiting out there for her.
'In five years I would hope to be married and have a kid,' she said.
The graciousness lapsed only once in her interview. She couldn't resist a dig at Pitt's new punk rocker bleached blond hairdo.
'Billy Idol called - he wants his look back,' she said.
