How to spot an Aussie in London

Australians love London —well, why wouldn't they? We in London are a sophisticated, urban and friendly lot — honest! — and expat Aussies fit seamlessly into life in the capital. But if you fancy spotting a displaced Bruce or Sheila (sorry), just use our handy cut-out-and-keep guide. Just keep that tongue firmly in cheek...

Their wardrobe: Aussies seem inable to judge the seasons — otherwise known as wet, wet, wet and wet — over here. Either wrapping up overly warm during our summer, or sporting too few togs come winter, they're fans of cargo pants, complete with Reef sandals, and surf-y gear by labels including Rip Curl, Stussy, Quiksilver, Hot Buttered and Mrs Palmers.

That healthy sheen: All that outdoor living and energetic lifestyles give Australians a giveaway ruddy look — in marked contrast to the wan pall of weary Londoners. Spot that freckle-dusted face, strong, purposeful walk and pink cheeks? Odds on that's an Aussie.

The accent: OK, OK, that's a kind of given. But make sure you distinguish between a Kiwi, Tasmanian and Aussie accent — including differences between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth — lest you seriously offend someone from Down Under. Just don't ask us how to tell the difference...
