Former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan today became the UK's ninth Chief Scout since scouting began.

The 50-year-old father off four, who also presented the Duncan Dares show in the Eighties, accepted the invitation to lead about half a million scouts for five years.

A former Cub Scout himself, Duncan said: "Scouting is alive and well in 21st- century Britain. I can think of no better organisation to provide a creative and challenging framework for the positive development of young men and women.

"Being leader gives me the chance to contribute to the positive development of tomorrow's adults."

Sally Milner, a nineyearold Cub Scout from Kingston, said: "I've met the new Chief Scout and he's cool.

"It's great we have a real action man as our new leader."

Founder Robert Baden-Powell was the first Chief Scout in 1921.
