Straining to make sense of it all Catholic priest Paul O'Sullivan, 75, from Mount Carmel church in Kensington Church Street, said: "At first sight they look like icecream cones.
"My best guess is that they're Roman figures. I would never have thought in a million years they could be angels. But what a lovely idea for the Tube. If only they had bigger wings you could leap off the train and maybe they could carry you off into the heavens. I have been stranded on this platform for 20 minutes. I could do with a guardian angel right now."
It took Pauline Beesley, 47, from Lancashire, a good five minutes before she finally piped up and exclaimed: "I know they're trees!
"No, may be not. They could be Indians."
Then her train arrived after being held up for 15 minutes. "I'm not from around here," she added. "I'm from Lancashire and judging by the delays this morning people on the Tube could do with a few angels to lift their weary souls."
Station supervisor Fionnuala Cullen was not surprisingly a little more optimistic.
"I like them and my favourite one is the blue statue as he looks more like an angel," she said. "I'm not quite sure about the other ones but who knows what's behind the mind of an artist."
The angels will be on display until the end of October.
