SE5 offers a lively alternative to Hoxton as Camberwell Arts Week kicks off with a series of exhibitions, art talks and visits to artists' studios. A retrospective of the paintings of Terry Frost at Camberwell's House Gallery tomorrow until July 1 (70 Camberwell Church Street SE5, Tue and Wed noon to 5pm, Thu and Fri noon to 8.30pm, Sat and Sun 2pm to 6pm) includes his famous abstract spirals from the 1970s as well as new work. He'll also be in conversation tonight at 8.45pm with actress Jenny Agutter at Camberwell College Of Arts (Wilson Road SE5, £2 donation).

As counterpoint to the exuberance of Frost's work, abstract painter and former Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport shows his carefully restrained household gloss paintings at nearby 2 D'Eynsford Road SE5 (tomorrow until July 1, Tue to Sun 2pm to 6pm, free). And two artists who are based in the area, sculptor Antony Gormley and painter Tom Phillips, both open their studios for guided tours at 5pm next Tuesday and Wednesday respectively (£10 each, returns only).

As a prime example of utilising an unpromising space, a huge collaborative effort by teams of artists, including Sonia Bruce and Jonathan Kearney, has transformed the derelict Pelican House, a former publishing house in Peckham Road SE15. Visitors will be asked to wear protective clothing before entering the building.

A humorous highlight has cult Glaswegian artist David Shrigley, who draws cartoons accompanied by rambling, off-beat text, presenting the annual Craft lecture. He'll be talking about his work and showing slides of his drawings at Camberwell College Of Arts tomorrow at 8pm (free).

Many events are free but proceeds from ticket sales go to local charities and, in addition to the serious art stuff, there'll be plenty of kids' activities too.
