Going back to the future

When photographer Daniel Meadows embarked on a journey round England in 1973, he took his dark-room with him. For more than a year, he travelled the country in a doubledecker he had bought, spending the day taking portraits of as many ordinary people he could find who were willing to pose, and developing the pictures in his bus's DIY dark-room that night.

Twenty-five years later, Meadows decided to revisit some of the hundreds of everyday people he had photographed in the 1970s, to photograph them again and discover what the contrasts might show. It wasn't an easy task, as he hadn't taken the names of anyone he had photographed, so he enlisted the help of local newspapers, who published some of his pictures and invited readers to make contact if they could identify who these people were.

Meadows eventually tracked down 33 of them, and now their portraits, old and new, have been collected in his book The Bus: The Free Photographic Omnibus (Harvill, £15), along with interviews with the participants, who describe their lives since those first photographs. This exhibition comprises images from the book.
