Glory of the gory

Tartan release the Tetsuo duo on DVD. The first is 1988's groundbreaker from Shinya Tsukamoto ? cheap but very nasty and chock-full of great stop-frame effects. The plot, such as it is, follows a man who becomes infected with metal poisoning and slowly turns into a mechanoid, with guns, drills and all manner of industrial machinery sprouting from every pore and orifice.

The scene that had people leaving the cinema in droves is the one where his penis turns into a huge drill, with very unfortunate consequences for his girlfriend. Bodyhammer is more of the same, this time in colour. Gigglingly gruesome, and a landmark of inventiveness and camerawork.

Verdict: Banzai.
