"The omens are not good." Problems with cracked glazing at another modern landmark, the £120 million Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo, resulted in most of the roof being shrouded in unsightly tarpaulins for several years to protect passengers.
It was thought that panels had exploded because of "glass cancer", a problem caused by the formation of a chemical during manufacture which can later expand. Legal action was eventually settled out of court in 2001.
Similar glazing failures were also identified in 11 stations on the Jubilee Line Extension.
